Preventing Unauthorized Transfers to Your Account

For detailed information on how to control access to your files through FTP, see our Permissions Tutorial.

You are responsible for all files transferred to and stored in your WebCom account. To prevent unauthorized transfers, ensure that all directories in your account have "write" permission turned off for everyone but yourself. This is a relatively simple process, as by default, the permissions for all directories created by you will be set up this way.

The WebCom File Manager "pr" (public read) and "pw" (public write) checkboxes control the ability to view and place files in a directory through FTP. To prevent people from being able to place files in your account, make sure none of your directories have the "pw" box checked.

If you are using a FTP client to manage access to your files, then make sure that the file listing looks like this: "drwxr-xr-x". The numerical permissions for this setting are 755.

Sometimes, you will want to permit uploads by a specific person. The best way to do this is to change the permissions on a subdirectory for a short period, and tell them to transfer whatever files are necessary during this period. Make sure to check that no one else takes advantage of this afterward, and delete any unwanted files.
