How to Edit a File

To edit a file, simply click on a highlighted filename on the File Listing Screen. This will cause the File Editing Screen to be displayed, with the contents of the selected file placed in the file editing box. Clicking on the "Save" button will save any changes you have made, and cause the action specified in your File Manager preferences to be taken (the options are render, edit, directory). A message informing you that the file has been edited and saved will appear at the top of the returned screen if you have specified "edit" or "directory" in your preferences.

The File Editing Screen

The File Editing Screen contains four elements:

To see an example of this screen, load the File Manager, and select a file to be edited.

You can edit your file by using the mouse and cursor keys to move around, highlight, and delete text, just as you would in a basic text editor (such as Notepad in Windows or SimpleText on the Macintosh).

Why are my changes not being saved?

The most common source of this problem is that the default settings in your Netscape preferences are causing Netscape to load an old version of your page from "cache" (copies stored on your computer, to prevent them from having to be re-transferred each time a page is viewed). To prevent this from occuring, follow the instructions below:

Under your Netscape Menu:

Options/Preferences/Cache and Network

set Verify Documents to Every Time

and clear out your disk and memory cache, by hitting the buttons labeled "Clear Memory Cache Now" and "Clear Disk Cache Now".

If you are using Netscape with Netcom's Netcruiser, there have been several reports of problems with the File Editing Screen. Browsers other than Netscape will probably not work with the File Manager.
