Note: You must use FTP to install non-text/HTML files, such as pictures, sound files and compressed files.

Listing Files in Directories

The File Manager automatically displays the Directory Listing Screen, with the contents of your home directory when you first load it.

  • Directories are highlighted and bolded, and have folder icons displayed next to them. Clicking on a directory will cause the File Manager to display a list of the of the files within the selected directory. The File Manager can also be configured to recursively list subdirectories by selecting the "List subdirectories recursively" checkbox on the File Manager Preferences screen.
  • Editable files are highlighted, and have an icon with writing on it displayed next to them. Clicking on a editable file will cause the File Editing Screen to be displayed.
  • Image files are highlighted, and have an image icon displayed next to them. Clicking on a image file will cause the image to be displayed, either by the browser, or an external program. Note: if the image file is not accessible through the WWW (by being in your www subdirectory tree), and the permissions are set such that it is also not accessible via anonymous FTP, you will get an error message stating "File Not Found" if you click on the image.
  • Files which are neither editable nor viewable will not be clickable. A blank page icon is used to indicate that a file is non-editable and/or of an unknown file type.

Detailed information about the File Manager Listing Screen is available. We urge you to review it before using the File Manager.

Creating Files and Directories

Creating a file or directory is as simple as entering the name of the file or directory to be created, and then pressing a button. If you have chosen to create a directory, the directory listing screen will be redisplayed with the newly created directory. If you have chosen to create a file, the File Editing Screen will be displayed, allowing you to type or paste in the content of the file to be created. To save the file, you click on the "Save" button. In most cases, the newly created file is displayed as if you had accessed it directly with your Web browser (depending on how you've set the "action after file save" option in the File Manager Preferences form).

Warning:Text files greater than 32k in size cannot currently be created or edited. You can view the first 32k of a file in the file editing window, but the save button will not be displayed.

Editing Files

To edit a file, simply click on the name of the file to be edited. The File Editing Screen will appear, with the contents of the selected file displayed within the file editing box. You may use your mouse and keyboard arrow keys to move around and alter the contents of your file. Once you have made the desired changes, simply click on the "Save" button, and in most cases, the newly created file is displayed as if you had accessed it directly with your Web browser (depending on how you've set the "action after file save" option in the File Manager Preferences form).

Warning:Text files greater than 32k in size cannot currently be created or edited. You can view the first 32k of a file in the file editing window, but the save button will not be displayed.

Deleting Files and Directories

To delete files and directories, simply click the "del" checkbox next to the file(s) and directories to be deleted, and select the "Submit Changes" button. A screen will be returned asking you to confirm the deletions, if you decide you do not want to delete a particular file from the list presented, simply click the checkbox next to it off, and select the "Delete" button. The selected files will then be deleted, and the directory listing screen will be redisplayed, minus the deleted files and directories. If you have chosen to delete a directory containing files, a message informing you that the directory could not be deleted will be displayed at the top of the screen (a directory must be empty in order to be deleted - you must delete all files in the directory before or at the same time you request deletion of the directory).

Restricting Access to Your Files

The WebCom File Manager supports easy control over public access to your files and directories by users accessing your site through both the World Wide Web and FTP (File Transfer Protocol).

Restricting Access to Your Files through FTP

Restricting access by the public to your files and directories through FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is as simple as selecting the public access File Permissions desired, by clicking the pw (public write) and pr (public read) checkboxes next to the files on to allow access, and off to deny access. Detailed information on Setting FTP Permissions with the File Manager and Using FTP is available. You are strongly urged to read this before changing the permissions on any of your files.

Restricting Access to Your Files through the WWW

Restricting access by the public to your files and directories through the World Wide Web is as simple as selecting the Access Authorization hotlink at the bottom of the directory listing screen and entering the userids and passwords of the people you wish to have access. More complex limitations are possible, but require manual configuration. For more information, please see the Web Communications Guide to Access Authorization.

Access Authorization

If you do not see the "Access Auth" hotlink at the bottom of the Directory Listing Screen, it is due to one of the followin two reasons:

  1. You have not activated Access Auth in the File Manager Preferences form. Click on the "Preferences" hotlink at the bottom of your screen. In the Preferences form, click the "Show Access Authorization Hotlink" checkbox so that it is checked. Click on the "Save Preferences" button. The directory listing is re-displayed, and you should now see the "Access Auth" link at the bottom of the screen for maintaining access authorization.
  2. You are not in the www subdirectory or a subdirectory thereof. Access Authorization only applies to www files, all of which are stored in or below the www subdirectory. Switch to the www subdirectory or one of it's subdirectories and you should see an "Access Auth" hotlink at the bottom of the screen.
Frequently Asked Questions Technical Limitations

Unfortunately, most Web browsers do not support the full functionality of the File Manager. The only browser we have tested that supports the full functionality of the WebCom File Manager is Netscape, available for a free 30 day trial from Netscape Communications.

Specific information on the problems we have observed with various browsers is available on a page providing Comments and Feedback on Individual Browsers and the File Manager.

The most commonly documented problem is a failure on the part of the browser in question to properly support the TextArea field. This field is used to allow you to view and edit text and HTML files. If your browser does not support this or any other function of the File Manager, we suggest that you upgrade your browser.
