Why does the jpg version of my graphic load instead of the gif version I specified?

If there are two graphic files in the same directory of your account with the same name, but one is a jpg and the other is a gif, the Netscape Server software will cause the jpg version to load instead of the gif, even when the gif version is explicitly specified in an HTML reference or URL.

The reason behind this feature is that gifs are compatible with more browsers. This allows a Web designer to specify gif as the file format, but load a smaller, sometimes better quality jpg if the browser can recognize it.

If this feature is causing problems for the way you want your pages displayed, you can avoid it by simply renaming your graphic files so that none share names.

Netscape calls this feature Image Switching, and more information is available at their Web site.
