Virtual Hosting

Servers on the Internet normally are assigned a single domain name which is the unique address of that server on the global network. WebCom's domain name, for example, is webcom.com/~webcom. Virtual Hosting refers to the ability of a single server to host multiple unique domains. WebCom supports Virtual Hosting.

If you register your own domain name such as your-company.com, then you can advertise your URL simply as http://www.your-company.com, which is much shorter, more professional looking, and easier for people to remember. (Additionally, you can create email addresses for sending and receiving email from users@your-company.com).

If you do not register your own domain name, then your home page is accessed at http://webcom.com/~webcom/userid/.

A virtual domain will also work with references to subdirectories off of your www directory. For instance, http://www.your-company.com/products/widget.html will display a web page named widget.html in the products sub-directory of your www directory in your home directory. (The reference to this file without your own domain name would be http://webcom.com/~webcom/userid/products/widget.html).
