Graphical Hit Counter FAQ
Also see the Webcom Graphical Counter documentation.
How do I add a graphical hit counter to my page?
Adding a graphical hit counter to your page is as simple as adding a single HTML tag. The most basic counter tag would be:
<IMG SRC="/counter">
For instructions on how to further customize your counter, see our online documentation which covers graphical hit counters.
How can I change the number of hits shown?
This is done with the Hit Count Management form. You can access this form by selecting it from our Customer Online Services menu. Each page with a counter will be listed, and the number of hits reported for each can be changed.
Can I have more than one counter in my account?
Yes you can. There is no limit to the number of counters you may use.
Why do I see the same number of hits in counters on different pages?
This usually is the result of having two identical counters (with the same options) on multiple pages, thus causing them to be cached. This can be remedied by using dummy variables in the counter tags.Why does my page load so slowly now that I've installed a counter?
You may notice an increase in the amount of time it takes to load your page after inserting a counter. This may result if you do not specify the HEIGHT and WIDTH of the image in the tag (a standard technique which causes all of the text of the page to load before the graphics). In order to determine the dimensions of any particular counter (as they will vary depending upon the counter's configuration), you can:
Why does my counter say "No Referer"?
When accessing any Web page or other type of file, the browser passes to the server what is called the referer, which is the URL of the page last visited. The counter mechanism depends upon the referer being passed in order to work correctly. If, however, the referer is not passed, your counter will display this message.
Virtually all contemporary browsers pass the referer, so this should be a very rare occurrence.
NOTE: We have observed this message being generated with certain pre-release versions of Netscape Navigator. This is not something we can "fix", but is the result of the product being as yet incomplete.
Why does my counter say "ERROR"?
You will get this "ERROR" graphic instead of the proper counter if there is any trouble getting the correct count from our database of accesses. Such errors are usually only momentary, and will usually be replaced with the correct number if you reload the page. If you find that the problem persists, please contact WebCom Technical Support at support@webcom.com, where an engineer will be able to quickly resolve the problem.
